Legislature passes housing package days before the end of the session

A Housing bill full of compromise was passed by the House and Senate and sent off to the Governor on May 13. The Housing Conference Committee, having only met twice to work out the two bills, created a bill that makes key investments in housing, as well as fits some of the GMNP's 2026 legislative priorities.

Key appropriations in the bill include:

  • $100 million for housing infrastructure bonds (HIB)
  • $14.275 million for the Greater Minnesota Workforce Housing grant program
  • $38 million for Family Homeless Prevention and Assistance Program (FHPAP)
  • $150,000 for homebuyer education training
  • Policy language around agency reporting on fiscal balances and restrictions on interest spending

Noteably missing from the bill are zoning preemption provisions, which occupied many housing discussions at the Capitol this session.
